Moschino was founded in Milan in 1983 by Franco Moschino, who made clothes with jokes stitched into them: slogans, peace signs, hearts. Love Moschino is the younger diffusion line, and Moschino Jeans came before it. What turns up here is Love Moschino mini skirts, one of them tagged Y2K, Moschino bootcut jeans with the embroidered eagle, and once a Boutique Moschino wool coat cardigan, sold at £145.

How the sizes run

Our Love Moschino cargo mini skirt is tagged EU 36, a UK 8, which we list as W29; it measured 14.5 inches across the waist, 29 round, with a little give. The dark denim ruffle skirt, covered in our Y2K guide, is tagged UK 8, which we list as W28, and measured 14 inches across, 28 round, with the same give.

The Moschino bootcut jeans carry a W29 tag, and they measured 15.5 inches across, 31 round, with no stretch that we noted, a 7.5 inch front rise and a 31 inch inseam. They are nearer a UK 10, pinned on a UK 8 for the photos, so go by the numbers. More of the cut under flare jeans.

What to check on a second-hand Moschino

Start with the hardware on the two skirts, where the house put its name. On our cargo skirt the logo buttons are gold, a matched set with crisp lettering; on the denim skirt the oversized front zip should run without catching. Then inside: on the pieces we have handled, the label names the line and the care label gives the country and the fibre content.

Then the fabric. The skirts are stretch cotton and stretch denim, so check the waistband has not gone slack. The jeans read as rigid denim, as far as we have seen. On our pair the distressing and patchwork were put there by hand, with sashiko stitching and a tiger insert on the back pocket, so check that stitching is secure.

Is Love Moschino the same as Moschino? Same house, different price point: Love Moschino is the diffusion line that took over from Moschino Jeans in 2008. The main line is Moschino Couture, by the brand's own account (often printed Moschino Couture!, or simply Moschino, as far as we have seen).

Are Moschino sizes Italian? Labels often carry an Italian size alongside UK, and an IT 42 is about a UK 10, but the pieces we have had were tagged UK, EU or by waist; jeans use US waist sizes. The listing always carries the flat measurements.
