Pierre Balmain founded his Paris house in 1945 with the Jolie Madame silhouette; Oscar de la Renta ran the couture from 1993 to 2002 and Olivier Rousteing has led it since 2011. The 1990s Balmain Paris silk ties come from the years when the name was licensed widely, and they were made properly: heavy silk, geometric weaves, hand-finished tips.
How wide are vintage Balmain ties? 1990s ties run 9 to 10 cm at the blade, wider than today's 7 to 8 cm. We give the width and length of each one.
How do you check the silk on a Balmain tie? Composition label, the slip-stitch along the back, the keeper loop and the way the lining is set. The photos show the back as well as the front.
