Maurices opened in Duluth, Minnesota in 1931, when E. Maurice Labovitz started a small women's clothing shop, and it grew into a chain of small-town and shopping mall stores across America. The pairs that reach us are its 2000s juniors denim: low rises, bootcut legs, studded and embroidered back pockets. We have five pieces in, four pairs of bootcut flares and one pair of embroidered shorts, priced between £25 and £30.
How the sizes run
Maurices tags are US numbers, so we go by the tape.
Every piece is measured flat across the waistband. The W30 came in at 15 inches flat, 30 round, and we list it as a UK 8 to 10. The W32 measured 16 inches flat, 32 round, a UK 12 to 14, and the W33 16.5 inches flat, 33 round, a UK 12. The largest, a W35 tagged US 12, measured 17.5 inches flat, 35 round, a UK 14 to 16 on our chart. All four pairs of jeans have a little give. The shorts are a W30 too, 15 inches flat and tagged US 5/6, but with no stretch, so they fit a UK 8 to 10 depending on how fitted you like them.
Front rises run 7 to 9.5 inches, so every pair sits low.
On the jeans, inseams go from 28.5 to 31 inches and thighs from 9.5 to 12 inches flat, so check the leg against a pair you already wear. The W35 is pinned on a UK 8 for the photos, which is why the numbers are the ones to trust. More on wearing a low rise now in our Y2K guide.
What we check on a second-hand pair
The studs first, on the pair that has them. We count them against the pattern and look for holes where one has gone. Embroidered pockets get a close look for pulled threads. Then the hardware, button and zip, and the inside labels: on the pairs we have handled those carry a country of manufacture and the care wording. Stretch is the real test on a low rise. We pull the waistband and watch it come back, because a pair that has lost its recovery bags at the knee and seat once worn. On bootcuts we turn up the back of the hem, which frays first under a heel, and check the inner thigh for thinning.
How do Maurices sizes convert? The tags we see are US misses and junior numbers, so the label is only a starting point. We list the flat waist, front rise, inseam and thigh and you go by those.

Return any piece within 14 days of delivery: tell us within 14 days, then post it back within 14 days of telling us.
