St Michael

St Michael was Marks & Spencer's own label from 1928 to 2000, so the name alone dates a piece to the twentieth century. The label styles changed by decade and the quality was often better than the shop's later reputation: silk-cotton knits, pure cotton shirts, viscose skirts that were meant to last. M&S brought the name back in 2026 for a collaboration with Aries.

Do St Michael sizes match today's? Not quite: older M&S sizing ran a little generous. We measure everything flat and list a modern UK equivalent.

What do you check on a St Michael piece before listing it? The label generation, composition tag, buttons and seams, photographed close so you can date it yourself.

What UK size is a vintage St Michael W30? On the one St Michael W30 piece we measured, the waistband was 30″ round; we listed it as a UK 14. Our measurements, taken flat on each piece, not the brand's chart.

Does St Michael run small or true to size? On the one St Michael piece labelled UK 10 that we measured, the bust was 40″ round (the UK standard for that label is about 35″). That is roomier than the UK standard for the label.

“Our UK estimate” is the size on each piece's own listing, tried on our model (5′6″, UK 8). Jeans sit on the hips, so a waistband measures more than the natural waist it is made for: about 3″ more on a low rise, 2″ on a mid rise, 1″ on a high rise, the same rule Will it fit? uses. Shorts are left out of the inseam column.
