Marks & Spencer is the quiet one on this list and the best value on it. Older M&S and St Michael knitwear is often 100% cashmere or extra-fine lambswool at a fraction of what new cashmere costs, and the tailoring from the Alfred Brown Savile Row cloth is properly made. It is not glamorous and I do not pretend it is; it is well-made British basics that have already lasted twenty years. Sizes are honest UK sizes, which makes a change.
