Hennes opened in Västerås, Sweden in 1947, became Hennes & Mauritz in 1968 and reached Britain in 1976. Two kinds of H&M are worth buying second-hand: the designer collaborations that started with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004, and the pure cashmere knits and trousers from the 2010s, which were made in 100% cashmere at a price nobody else matched. Older labels reading Hennes or H&M Woman date a piece to the 1990s.
How do H&M sizes convert? European: EU 36 is a UK 8, EU 38 a UK 10, and the fit is on the small side. We list flat measurements on every piece.
How do you check H&M cashmere? The composition label first, then the hand feel and how the knit has pilled and worn, both shown in the photos.

What UK size is a vintage H&M W30? On the one H&M W30 pair we measured, the waistband was 30″ round, with a rise of 13″; we listed it as a UK 12–14. Jeans sit on the hips, so the waistband measures more than the natural waist it is made for. Our measurements, taken flat on each pair, not the brand's chart.
Does H&M run small or true to size? On the 2 H&M pieces labelled UK 6–8 that we measured, the bust was 32–34″ round (the UK standard for that label is about 32.3″). That is close to the UK standard for the label.
“Our UK estimate” is the size on each piece's own listing, tried on our model (5′6″, UK 8). Jeans sit on the hips, so a waistband measures more than the natural waist it is made for: about 3″ more on a low rise, 2″ on a mid rise, 1″ on a high rise, the same rule Will it fit? uses. Shorts are left out of the inseam column.
