Klaus Märtens made his air-cushioned sole in 1945; R. Griggs in Wollaston, Northamptonshire licensed it and the first boot came out on 1 April 1960, hence the 1460, with the 1461 shoe a year later. Yellow welt stitching, the AirWair heel loop and the two-tone sole edge are the constants. Dr Martens also made clothes, and the laser-cut dresses with the cross logo are from that side of the business.
